We went to a party in a nice apartment tonight. We were especially impressed by the chandelier!

Italian dinner

We had Italian for dinner last night, and they seated us next to the bar, where there were tons of grappa bottles on display.

Sleet?

It was sunny out, and then there were suddenly drops or flakes flying past. The one I examined was icy, but smaller than hail. Sleet?

This man was waiting for the bus with me after work:

Fruit market

David picked and took the picture today. This is on our old block, and it's sort o remarkable that at 7:30pm in February there are still outdoor fruit markets.

Rainy Walk

Despite the grey skies and rain, I needed to get out of the house. I decided to hunt for photos - so today I uploaded the full resolution images. Our street looked like this today - the construction has been slowly working it's way towards us... and it's here.

Usually when I get down to the river I turn right and look at the Wall, but I realized I hadn't walked the other direction, though I'd seen it on a boat tour months ago. As I made my way to the water, I saw this... sculpture?

Or maybe it's just storage for some construction stuff? The shopping cart looks really out of place. The waterfront looked like this:

A little further along, I noticed some colorful painting on some riverside ruins:

And so I took more pictures of them:

And at that point, my podcast ended and I decided I wouldn't see anything else as fascinating and headed home!

In the kitchen

I spent a quiet day at home chasing off the tail end of my cold and cooking and cleaning. I tried homemade granola for the first time:

Double feature

Muffins!

I made muffins weekly for a while (though now that I think of it, that was a decade ago), but I haven't since I moved. 

These are courtesy of my mom's universal muffin recipe and the muffin cups David's mom got us for Christmas!

Police Vans

I found out that the only bus line going to our work would be shut down due to protests in Babelsberg. I left well before any protest started, but the police were already out in force. 

Misplaced

If you look closely, you might see the bolt sitting on the statue. 

Potsdam soccer

I walked down to the train today, and I realized I never got a picture of the soccer practice I sometimes walk by. When the coach yells, I feel irrationally scared - I think US television and movies always equate yelling Germans with villains from WWII. 

Valentine's Day pesto

We had pesto for our first Valentine's Day, so we usually have it (if I'm in town, that is). 

Flowers!

I think these are the first flowers we've had in the house. David got them for me, hooray! 

Memorials

I had heard of these but not noticed one until today: engravings in the sidewalk noting the homes of victims of the holocaust. An everyday reminder of a terrible past. 

 

Gravitational waves!

The big physics news today is about the detection of gravitational waves by LIGO! The merging of two black holes a billion years ago produced ripples in spacetime that were detected by the LIGO instrument in September! I'm about as excited as I've ever been about black holes.

I'm still under the weather, but hopefully proper hydration will speed my recovery.

From the Doctor's Office

I dropped in to the doctor today. I've missed enough days of work due to my cold that I needed a note - and I wanted to be sure nothing was wrong beyond a cold. She prescribed additional days off work and ibuprofen for my headache.

And stayed home from work today, it's as good a time as any to show the current state of our dining room. Still a work in progress, but useful!

Halfway down is a structure that's more of a gate than a building, but when the train is stopped you can only see one side of it. 

Kaiser's

The closest branch of our main grocery store, Kaiser's. I usually zoom by it on the tram, but today was one of the few days it was faster to walk down to the s-bahn station.

If you look closely, you can see the bear on top!
